GAB Exec Speaks at Rotary Club of Milwaukee-North Shore.
April 9, 2018
Four Points Sheraton, Brown Deer, WI
James Dean, Executive Assistant, Generations Against Bullying (GAB) was invited to be the featured speaker at the weekly meeting of the Rotary Club of Milwaukee-North Shore. What a fun group!
James spoke of the epidemic of bullying in our society and how “bullycide” has become one of the leading causes of death in our middle school age children. Despite such a negative subject that many are reluctant to address, James described the very positive program that GAB has developed-the Peer Ambassador Upstander Program. “Bullying doesn’t occur in front of administrators, councelors, or teachers,” James said. It occurs in front of the students, and they don’t know what to do. The Peer Ambassador Upstander Program teaches students what bullying is and how to become an upstander, because if a bystander to bullying acts to become and upstander in a non-threatening way, the bullying will stop within 10 seconds 85% of the time. Given that bullying occurs in front of the students, they have the power to stop it. “It just takes a little time to train our students and they can change the culture of learning in our schools, said Dean.
Thank you to Andy Kimmel and the North Shore Rotarians for their great questions about our GAB Program, and for their wonderful hospitality.
